It Ain't About You – Flip the book over, and you'll find a dedicated section for friends, family, and caregivers. This part provides essential advice on how to effectively support a loved one with cancer. It emphasizes empathy, active listening, and understanding the patient's needs without overwhelming them. This guide aims to help supporters be there in the most meaningful and supportive ways possible.
Glodean Champion, inspired by her own cancer journey, shares her motivation behind the book: "Having witnessed the profound impact of cancer on both patients and their loved ones, I wanted to create a resource that addresses the needs of both groups and include a little humor with my wisdom to remind people that there's a human being inside of the cancer story. Is she what the other girls call her, a "bulldagger"? And what does that even mean?
In the midst of her transformation from tomboy to young woman, the community she loves explodes in a racial uprising. The Watts Riots teach Zayla the fragility of life and the importance of friendship. As the embers die down and the smoke clears, Zayla also learns something else - a family secret. Salmon Croquettes is a sensitive exploration of Zayla's transition from childhood incomprehension - why do adults expect children to magically understand what is acceptable and what isn't - to an acceptance of who she is and the truth of who her parents really are.
